Dyson V10, V11, V12 or V15 Keeps Cutting Out? 3 Common Causes

If your Dyson V10, V11, V12 or V15 keeps cutting out while you're vacuuming, the symptoms can usually tell you where the fault is. It could be a battery problem, a fault within the motor or main body assembly, or the vacuum may be detecting restricted airflow.

I see Dyson cutting-out faults regularly in the workshop, and the important thing is not to immediately assume the battery needs replacing. Different faults can produce very similar symptoms, so it's worth narrowing down what's actually happening before spending money on parts you may not need.

This guide is aimed particularly at the Dyson V10, V11, V12 and V15 cordless ranges. I'll run through the three most common cutting-out problems and, importantly, how the symptoms differ between them.

1. Dyson Cuts Out but Starts Again Straight Away

If your Dyson runs normally for a few seconds or minutes, suddenly cuts out, but then starts again without needing to be charged, the battery may not be the problem.

This can indicate a fault within the main body, motor or electronic control circuitry. On these Dyson cordless models, a fault within the electronics can cause the machine to shut itself down even though there is still charge remaining in the battery.

You may also see a flashing light on the battery. This can make it particularly easy to assume that the battery itself has failed when the actual fault is elsewhere in the machine.

How Can I Tell If It Isn't the Battery?

The biggest clue is what happens immediately after your Dyson cuts out.

If you can release the trigger, press it again and the vacuum starts running without first being put back on its charger, this points away from the classic symptoms of a battery that has simply run out of usable charge.

Depending on your particular Dyson model and the exact fault, replacement of the main body or motor/body assembly may be required.

2. Dyson Cuts Out and Won't Restart Until It's Charged

This is much more typical of a worn or faulty Dyson battery.

Your Dyson may initially work normally but run for only a few minutes before suddenly stopping. The problem can be even more noticeable when using the vacuum on its MAX or Boost power setting, where it may run for only a very short time before cutting out.

When you try to restart it, nothing happens. You then put the Dyson back on charge and it works again, only for exactly the same problem to return.

If that's what your Dyson V10, V11, V12 or V15 is doing, the battery is a much more likely cause.

Signs of a Failing Dyson Battery

  • The vacuum runs for a much shorter time than it used to.
  • It cuts out particularly quickly on MAX or Boost mode.
  • It won't immediately restart after cutting out.
  • Putting it back on charge allows it to work again.
  • You may see a flashing warning light on the battery.

If these symptoms match what your machine is doing, replacing the battery will often solve the problem.

3. Dyson Cuts Out and Says the Airways Are Blocked

The third common problem is slightly different. Your Dyson may stop while you're using it and display an airway blocked or similar airflow warning.

The first thing to do is check for a genuine blockage. Check the wand, cleaner head, bin inlet and the airways through the main body. You should also make sure the filter is clean, dry and fitted correctly.

If your filter is old, damaged or due for replacement, you can find replacement Dyson filters here.

However, if you've checked everywhere, cleaned the filter and the machine still reports a blockage, don't keep dismantling random parts looking for something stuck inside. There are other reasons a Dyson can continue to detect restricted airflow even when there isn't an obvious blockage.

Dyson Cutting Out: Quick Diagnosis

Cuts out but immediately starts again:
Look more closely at the main body, motor or electronic control system rather than automatically replacing the battery.

Cuts out and won't work again until it's charged:
A worn or faulty battery is much more likely.

Cuts out with an airway or blockage warning:
Check the complete airflow path and filter first. If everything is clear and the warning remains, further diagnosis may be required.

Don't Replace Parts Until You've Checked the Symptoms

The most important thing when a Dyson V10, V11, V12 or V15 keeps cutting out is to pay attention to exactly what happens after it stops.

A flashing battery light doesn't automatically mean that the battery itself has failed. If the vacuum immediately starts again without being charged, that's a very different symptom from a Dyson that dies and has to go back on its charger before it will run again.

Spending a minute identifying which of these three patterns matches your Dyson can save you from buying a battery, main body or another expensive part that you didn't actually need.
