How to Clean a Dyson V12 or V15 Detect Optic Fluffy Roller

The fluffy roller on a Dyson V12 or V15 Detect spends its life picking up fine dust and dirt from hard floors, so eventually it's going to start looking rather grubby.

Fortunately, cleaning the Dyson Detect Optic fluffy roller is extremely easy. You don't need any tools, the roller can be removed in seconds, and with a proper wash you can get it looking remarkably close to new again.

There is one important distinction, though: the removable fluffy roller can be washed, but the main floor-head assembly contains electronics and must not be submerged or washed under running water.

How Often Should You Clean a Dyson Fluffy Roller?

There's no need to wash the roller after every use, but it's worth cleaning when you notice it becoming visibly dirty or when hair and fibres start accumulating around the ends.

Regularly checking the roller also gives you an opportunity to remove hair before it becomes tightly wrapped around the end cap or bearing area.

1. Remove the Dyson Fluffy Roller

Start by disconnecting the floor head from the vacuum.

On the Detect Optic head there's a small release at the end of the roller. Lift the end cap and the complete fluffy brush bar simply slides out of the floor head.

No screwdrivers or other tools are required.

2. Remove the End Cap and Check for Hair

Before washing the roller, remove the end cap and inspect the end of the brush.

Hair and fibres can work their way into this area, so remove anything that's become wrapped around the end of the roller.

Put the end cap safely to one side while you clean the brush.

3. Wash the Dyson Fluffy Roller

The removable fluffy roller can now be washed.

Use warm water and a small amount of mild detergent and gently work through the fibres. A soft toothbrush can be useful for removing dirt that's become trapped in the roller.

You don't need to be overly aggressive – work around the entire roller until the dirt has been released from the fibres.

4. Rinse the Roller Thoroughly

Once you're happy that the dirt has been removed, rinse the roller thoroughly with clean water.

This step is important because you don't want detergent residue remaining in the fluffy material once it dries.

Continue rinsing until the water runs clear and you're satisfied that the cleaning solution has been removed.

5. Remove as Much Water as Possible

Gently squeeze excess water from the fluffy roller to speed up the drying process.

You can then use a clean towel or paper towel to absorb additional moisture from the surface.

Don't refit the roller at this stage, even if it only feels slightly damp.

6. Leave the Dyson Roller to Dry Completely

Put the roller somewhere warm, dry and well ventilated and leave it until it is completely dry.

Allowing it to dry overnight is a sensible minimum, but drying time will depend on temperature and airflow.

Do not refit the roller while it is still damp. If you're unsure, give it longer.

7. Clean the Clear Floor-Head Housing

While the fluffy roller is drying, it's a good opportunity to clean the rest of the floor head.

This part needs to be treated differently.

Do not wash or submerge the complete floor head. It contains the motor, wiring and electronics for the powered roller and Detect illumination system.

Instead, use a slightly damp cloth or suitable cleaning wipe to clean the clear plastic and accessible surfaces.

For dirt trapped in small gaps, carefully work the cloth or wipe into the area rather than pouring water into the floor head.

8. Dry and Polish the Floor Head

Once the dirt has been removed, go over the housing with a clean microfibre cloth.

This removes any remaining moisture or cleaning residue and is particularly useful on the clear plastic section, which can otherwise show marks and fingerprints.

9. Refit the Clean Dyson Fluffy Roller

Only refit the brush once it is completely dry.

Replace the end cap on the roller, slide the brush back into the floor head and position the end cap correctly before pushing it down into its locked position.

That's the entire job – no tools and very little dismantling required.

Can You Wash a Dyson Detect Optic Floor Head?

Don't wash the complete powered floor head in water.

This is an important distinction because the removable fluffy roller and the floor-head assembly aren't the same thing.

  • Removable fluffy roller: can be removed and washed.
  • Powered floor-head assembly: contains electrical components and should be wiped clean rather than submerged or rinsed.

If you're giving your Dyson a full clean, always separate washable removable components from parts containing motors, wiring, batteries or electronics before introducing water.

Dyson V12 & V15 Fluffy Roller Cleaning Tips

  • Check the ends of the roller for trapped hair whenever you remove it.
  • Use warm water rather than extremely hot water.
  • Rinse thoroughly so no cleaning residue remains in the fibres.
  • Remove excess water to help the roller dry more quickly.
  • Never refit the roller while it's damp.
  • Keep water away from the powered floor-head assembly.

The Dyson Detect Optic fluffy roller is one of the easier Dyson floor heads to maintain. A periodic wash of the removable roller and a wipe over the powered housing is usually all that's needed to keep it clean and working properly.
